What is grammar?

Simply, grammar is a level of language that includes two sub-components of language, i.e. morphology (the science of word formation) and syntax (the science of sentence). It has been a controversial issue in the English Language Teaching (ELT) scenario for many years.

More importantly, grammar is viewed as the native speaker's competence that can generate infinite numbers of sentences with a finite set of rules. It can be defined as 'the mental system' that allows human beings to form and interpret the words and sentences of their own language.

Principally, it incorporates three dimensions, i.e. form (structure), meaning (semantic), and use (appropriateness). In other words, grammar structure should be accurately, meaningfully, and appropriately used while teaching and learning.
